After reviewing the ESL course books Language to Go, New Cutting Edge and New Headway, I found it very interesting how each text offered creativity in their approach that I can see would benefit different learning styles and goals. However, from a teacher’s perspective and in prioritising student learning, New Cutting Edge is the preferred text. This course book is a visually appealing text with colourful illustrations. It uses 'real life’ English with most units dedicated to practical phrases that students are encouraged to practice. The book has a grammar focus which offers continuity and consistency. Another great feature is ‘wordspot’ – a collocation activity where students are given a chance to practice using them. There is a good balance between the four language skills and learner interests are taken into account with the wide choice of relevant topics that can be used on a daily basis.
