2025 June – Important research: Supporting EAL learners effectively

A new research report from the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) examines 9 years of data from over 110,000 NSW students and reveals that Australian English as an additional language (EAL) learners need sustained support to thrive academically.

TIRF – The International Research Foundation for English Language Education

TIRF – The International Research Foundation for English Language Education – is pleased to announce its 2025 Doctoral Dissertation Grants (DDG) competition. Grants of up to US $5,000 will be made to successful applicants investigating a range of topics in English language education. The application deadline is Wednesday, May 14, 2025.

Languages most frequently used for web content as of February 2025, by share of websites

As of February 2025, English was the most popular language for web content, with over 49.4 percent of websites using it. Spanish ranked second, with six percent of web content, while the content in the German language followed, with 5.6 percent.

Academic Vocabulary: Building Knowledge and Use

In this webinar, Professor Averil Coxhead will focus on the importance of academic vocabulary to English learners preparing to study at university. Two common questions from teachers about academic vocabulary are ‘which words do my learners need to know’ and ‘how should I teach those words’? Professor Coxhead will examine these questions and what learners and teachers need to know about academic vocabulary and principled ways to increase knowledge and use of this lexis in English. Techniques and resources are provided to support the development and assessment of knowledge and use of academic lexis.

Teaching Oral Language Through Drama

In this energising online workshop, Drama in Education specialist, Jodie Whitehurst, will share a series of simple, accessible drama techniques to help teachers engage and motivate their EAL/D learners. Learning through drama allows students to connect their brains with their bodies, leading to more expressive communication and greater retention of new language structures. Participants will explore these drama-based strategies through hands-on participation, allowing them to gain a sense of how such learning will feel for their students. No previous drama experience is required – just bring an open mind and a sense of fun!

Developing Listening in Direct Entry Programs

In this session, we will be looking at the skills of Listening in Direct Entry English Programs- both embedded into the curriculum, and as remedial activities.

Members of the academic team at University of Western Australia Centre for English Language Teaching (UWA CELT) will present an activity used in the classroom called Listening Circles. The remainder of the webinar will focus on a discussion of ways to improve Direct Entry students’ listening in remedial 1-1 activities.
