The Role
Working as an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher in the Defence context provides you with a wide range of experiences in and out of the classroom.
The role has accountability to a significant international engagement aim, working with Defence personnel from the Indo-Pacific region and in support of the National Defence Strategic Policy (2024).
The main responsibilities include:
- Design, deliver and feedback on face-to-face or remote English language courses for all levels from Pre-Intermediate to Advanced General English.
- Design, deliver and feedback on face-to-face advanced English for Academic Purposes (EAP) / academic prep courses.
- Design and develop English language and English teacher development materials for classroom or online delivery.
- Develop and teach English for Specific Purposes (Military English).
- Monitor student personal and academic welfare and contribute to support mechanisms and reporting.
- Lead on / contribute to professional development of yourself and colleagues including engagement in the APS Performance and Goals performance management cycle.
About our Team
The Defence International Training Centre is a unique training unit within the Department of Defence. It delivers preparatory, English language and teacher education to members of regional Defence forces to support the Defence engagement relationships between Australia and its partners.
The centre has three main delivery sections: the Language Training Section, the Teacher Training Section and the Preparatory Training Section. Teachers may work across more than one of the sections within the academic year.
The team of language teachers work in a Defence environment, and are a flexible team that develop strong relationships with the students, and support cross-cultural awareness crucial to Australia’s strategic policy initiatives.

We seek someone who is interested in contributing to the greater mission of using English language training to support international defence engagement outcomes. They will be passionate about English language delivery to international students, be willing and able to engage adult students effectively in learning and apply current methods in their learning and teaching.
We require someone who wants to work as a member of a team and enjoys the collaborative aspect of a teachers’ staffroom, someone who is serious about their own professional development, and can support colleagues in theirs.
The background you would bring to this job will include experience in:
- Teaching English as a foreign language.
- Delivering and developing materials for General English, EAP, and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum.
- Developing and innovating (online) learning.
- Assessing English language competency.
- Working with and using the knowledge of students from a range of language backgrounds.
- Developing teachers of English as a second language.
- Working in a defence-related environment.
